New Directions
For the past three years I have focused on celebrating the women in my world through portraiture. Now in 2025 I’m turning in a new direction - to a more fibre based approach to art making. I will embrace all those historically undervalued womens’ “crafts” like embroidery, crochet, quilting… ways that women used fibres and threads to meet their practical needs (clothing, bedding, window covers) as well as to decorate and beautify their world.
My deep emotional connection to these traditions come from memories of my grandmother remaking my mothers’ used clothing to make me new school dresses, memories of watching her hands magically create clothing, quilts or doilies. So fabrics, threads and yarn all come with emotional weight for me. I feel pleasure handling, manipulating and creating with these materials.
I also find inspiration in reusing or “upcylcling” preused clothing, linens, home decor, papers, books…. They bring meaning and story into whatever I am creating.
Whatever I make in 2025- from tote bags to journals, vessels or collage, I will play with connections trying to see these materials with a fresh eye. I embrace the creative process for purely selfish reasons but if others respond to my art, that bribngs me evidence that art is about “connections”. And connecting with others in a. meaningful way is one of lifes greatest gifts,
